General Information On Travel Agent Jobs

By Tammie Caldwell

People around the globe enjoy traveling. While some enjoy planning their adventurers on their own, many seek out the services of a travel agency. People who work at these facilities, which may be private or public, offer tourism- and travel-related services to the public. This is done on the behalf of airlines, package tours, hotels, railways, cruise lines and other suppliers. Travel agent jobs are widely available to those interested in this line of work.

A lot of agencies service normal tourists. Some might also work closely with business travelers. There are also those that work exclusively with these business people. Every agency is different. Some are even in the business of being general sales agents for international travel companies. This set up allows them to have offices in regions around the globe.

Agencies of today were first established around the second portion of the nineteenth century. It was a man named Thomas Cook who led the way, developing a package tour and establishing agencies that worked closely with Midland Railway. Of course the industry started to grow once traveling was more affordable and accessible. Commercial aviation became more commonplace during the 1920s and was a time when this industry also saw more success.

Like the name suggests, these businesses and those who work on behalf of them are agents. It is their job to sell products and services for their suppliers. They do not keep any stock. That is, tickets and packages are only made available if they have been requested and purchased by customers. These things are then supplied to an agency at a discounted rate. Commission, or profit, is the difference of the price paid by the customer and the discounted price supplied to the agents.

People interested in this career should be good sellers. Their pay often depends on their ability to entice clients to make purchases. The higher and more sales they get, the increase in salary or pay. Commission details may be different based on the company. Some airlines have stopped providing commission to these agencies, so other parameters may be in place when it comes to flat fees or premiums on these sales.

In most regions the world, people who sell these tickets and packages must be licensed as travel agents. These professionals may work for these companies or be freelance agents. The number of jobs in this field are decreasing because people have access to the Internet and self-service websites that make trip planning simpler. Still, a lot more people are traveling.

Success in this industry may take some time. Still, there are plenty of classes and programs available to people interested in training and education. Those who want to work for an agency should find out what services the it provides, as well salary and pay rate set up. Freelance agents are encouraged to seek clientele, and develop their name and brand in the field.

These agencies are a popular choice for several reasons. They may offer discounted rates on packages. Furthermore, these professionals can ensure that all of the travel, lodging and other accommodations are properly set up. This can take a lot of stress out of planning a trip.
