Fresh knowledge, new skill. Learning how to sail is a refreshing new found knowledge that has been waiting for you to learn. There is so much useful information that you can tack onto everyday life and things that you honestly never knew. The skills that will be taught and left for you to develop are amazing. Tasks that you never even thought you would bring yourself on. The skills learned in cruising lessons will be part of your achievements as you advance and develop them.

A new environment. Have a whole new perspective of learning as you have the water on your campus and your boat as your classroom. A significant amount of learning will be done on dry land but the majority of the time you will be in the open waters to directly apply all the skills and theories you have received.

There are so many reasons why you could go cruising which is exactly why cruising is a great skill to learn. There are typically hundreds of cruising schools and tour operators in and around coastal cities, so there is likely one near you. You'll get a great day or perhaps even a week out on the water training with a crew. Meeting new people interested in cruising as well as using your hands learning new and rewarding skills.

Finding the right sailboats balance known as keeping it trim is yet another skill to master when learning these techniques and skills. Basically, this is keeping the vessel upright on an even keel which in turn reduces any drag caused by the winds. Trimming the sheets is the skill of mastering the actual sail-sheets. Trimming the sheets in and out with the purpose of capturing the wind to propel the boat is what this skill is all about. If your sheet is flapping out of control, you would need to tighten the trim to create smooth conditions.

Working with nature's powers and elements. During your cruising lessons, you will be taught how to work with the wind, weather, water and what lies beneath. In a way, respect for nature and what it brings you will be primarily emphasized; not taking each element for granted will also be appreciated. Using nature to your advantage and knowing when not to also plays an important role in your future cruising adventures.

For example cruising a tall ship with a crew of say over 20 will be a completely different set of skills to a two-manned sail sail-boat. Some of these different sail boat types include sharpie, skiff, cruising dinghy, clipper ships, and catamarans. Each has their own unique set of skills although all follow the above general rules and methods of cruising.

The greatest escape. Cruising lessons are as refreshing and relaxing as cruising on your own. You get to intently focus on learning this new skill that you detach from that deadline you have to meet, that leaking faucet which is due for repair, that new route you need to take to get to work and all of the life's burdens. As you get deeper into cruising, you will discover that it is a great way to clear your mind and frankly speaking take a break from it all.
