Picking From Different Turkey Hunting Seats

By Essie Osborn

During turkey hunts, an important aspect of a successful hunt is remaining completed still. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to stay still if you are sitting on the hard or wet ground and you are not comfortable. To combat this problem, different types of turkey hunting seats are available.

One type of seat is the vest and cushion combination. It is designed to provide you with pockets for holding any needed accessories and supplies, with a cushion attached. Some models allow the cushion to be removed while others have fixed cushions. Most of them, however, all include some kind of extra padding along the back piece of the vest.

Separate carry-along cushions are another option. Although there are many different models to choose from, they all are designed to be lightweight and very portable. Many models have velcro straps that can be used to attach the cushion to the straps of a backpack. There are also models with the same attaching abilities that have backrests and the whole thing folds compactly.

A ground seat is similar to a carry-along cushion but there are distinguishing differences. These types often have thicker cushions and higher back sections. Some models also have some type of short legs or a base to lift you off the ground a bit. If there are no legs, be sure to choose materials that are water resistant, particularly if you hunt in areas that hold moisture.

You could also choose a low profile chair. They are quite similar to carry alongs and ground seats but they raise you higher off the ground. This type of seat is often best suited for areas with wet ground. Additionally, they tend to have more back support and have arm pieces and legs that can be adjusted as needed. Pay attention to the type of legs that are on these types because four straight legs will sink into a wet ground.

In a blind, the previously mentioned seat types cannot be used. For this purpose, a blind seat is ideal. They are standard height to give you visibility through the cutouts, but they are lighter and many models fold up for easy transport. The height is most important because if you are not seated high enough, you will not be able to see or shoot.

It is important for the seat you choose to have a camouflage print. You must blend in with your surroundings as much as possible. Turkeys have the ability to see disturbances or differences in the background. Camouflage seating helps hide you even further and prevent a colored seat from making you visible and scaring off the turkeys.

When you are trying to choose the right seat, keep in mind that you will likely need more than one. Changes in location or how you hunt will require a different type of seat. Think about your typical location and its environment. Areas with a thoroughly wet ground will not allow you to use a seat with four straight legs without sinking. A seat with rounded half horseshoe legs will not sink but it will not allow you to back up to a tree to hide.
