The Cape Winelands Make A Fabulous Vacation Spot

Anyone one loves wine, beautiful scenery and has a sense of adventure should consider a vacation in South Africa. This amazing country has so much to offer. From rugged coast line, to souring mountains and picturesque villages it truly is a travellers paradise. The local people also offer a warm welcome to all their guests and make them feel at home.

The southern tip of Africa was settled by the Dutch in the sixteen hundreds. The Cape Town area was originally used as a coaling station and supply depot on the way to the orient. However, by the eighteen hundreds the British had become the dominant world power and taken over the administrative running of the area. Yet visitors will recognize right away the strong Dutch influence in everything from language to architecture. In the past few years the Cape Winelands have become a wonderful new place to vacation, drawing visitors from all over the world.

Over the past thirty years the wine route has become a very popular tourist destination. There are so many first class places to stay and every possible need is catered to. In addition to the local wines there is an abundance of freshly made local food, and places to stay that are suitable for the whole family.

Perhaps the most well known of the wine growing regions is Stellenbosch. The name is synonymous with miles of vineyards and a fantastic range of top quality products. Many of the vineyards are open to the public and they can see how the wine is produced from how the grapes are grown to how the wine is bottled and labeled. It really is a fascinating process that keeps many people in business.

After a hearty home cooked breakfast on the front porch, guests can enjoy a tour of the vine yards. They will learn all about how the grapes are grown and harvested. They can then move on to the processing plant where the wine is actually made. At the end of the tour there are special tastings so that the visitors can sample all of the wines produced on the farm. This is a fun and entertaining way to meet other travellers from all over the world.

In today's busy world many tourists are looking for a vacation that is a little different. They love the idea of combining great food, wines, accommodations and scenery. They can customize their trip to include a little bit of everything. This can be some time at the beach, hiking in the mountains and sipping wine on the porch. Those who really want to see how the production takes place will have the opportunity to tour one of the many vineyards.

There are an excellent range of places to stay. These range from family run bed and breakfasts to luxury hotels. Many of the farms are now diversifying and taking in guests as a way to help support them. Some even offer sites for weddings and conferences that are really outstanding.

South Africa has been through more than its share of turmoil, but the wine growing regions present a side of the country that is often overlooked. There is a wonderful history and heritage that in now a big part of the economic and cultural development. Fair trade is also a factor and many wines are produced under world wide agreements to promote sustainable agricultural development for everyone.
