Going On South Dakota Pheasant Hunts

By Minnie Whitley

When one is a fan of hunting animals, one of the most interesting animals to hunt down would be pheasants because it is very challenging but at the same time fun. Now of course if one would want to become a hunter, he has to first learn a few things before actually going to the field. Now beginners have to first learn some tactics and some tips before he can actually go on South Dakota Pheasant hunts.

Before even attempting to go on a hunt, it is very important to first do some research on the activities of the fowl. Now one has to remember to hunt these things early in the morning as this is the time they come out. If one does not like waking up early in the morning, then he may try late in the afternoon as this is another time wherein the fowls would come out.

Aside from the homework, the next thing that one has to do would be to make sure that all the equipment is intact. Now as a beginner, it is always best to use a twelve gauge shotgun because it is so easy to handle. Now if one would want a more powerful gun, then he can use a twenty gauge gun but do remember it is harder to use.

Hunting dogs are essential on any trip but then one has to make sure that the hunting dog is trained to act in this type of activity. Now the hunting has to make sure that it knows the smell of the pheasant so that it can hunt the bird down. If the dog knows the scent, then he will be able to lead the hunter to the nearest target.

Of course other than tracking down the bird, the dog has to know how to bring back the fowl that has already been shot. Now the dog of course has to get used to the smell of this kind of bird. Once the dog senses that the bird has been shot, it will be trained to retrieve it and bring it back.

Now when looking for these things, one should always try to go to a stream because these birds can usually be found near the edges of these streams. Pheasants are also known to be around crop edges. So when one would start a hunt, he should always start at these place because these are the places that they stay in the most.

Now do take note that these birds are very sensitive to vibrations and sounds. If they can sense or hear something that is out of the ordinary, their instinct will tell them to flee. It is because of this that hunters have to make sure to lead these pheasants to an open field.

The best way to do this would be to first locate the bird then shoot the gun in another direction completely away from the fowl. When the fowl hears this, he will change direction as he will not want to go near the area where he heard the gunshot. Use this strategy to bring it out into the open then shoot it once it presents itself.
