Choosing Your Namibia Safari Packages

By Iva Cannon

African safaris are an important step for those deciding to enjoy one. Selecting not only the country you will visit but also the itinerary of your trip can involve a lot of research over an extended period of time. Selecting the country to visit and what activities you will participate in while there may be the most important part of your research project. Choosing one of the many Namibia safari packages available may give you exactly what you are looking for.

There are many varied and beautiful areas to be experienced in this country. You will find mountains, coastal beaches, high plains and deserts that offer beautiful scenery as well as a wealth of wilderness and wildlife to enjoy. Walking safaris and air trips are part of nearly every trip and each territory visited might serve as a the high point of your stay. Most tours will cover three or more regions contained within the area.

The most common air excursion involves the Skeleton Coast area. Here you will experience miles of coastal waters that are littered with ship wrecked vessels from the past and whale skeletons. It is one of this country's most beautiful regions and should not be missed.

You may have the choice of being able to self drive through this country. Tour companies will supply a vehicle, maps, GPS and radios to accommodate you. The roads are in excellent condition in this area and the freedom of self determination appeals to many. Air travel is still necessary to reach many of the wilderness camps especially in the high desert. Some visitors choose to park their vehicles at one of the many lodges while they travel with guides into the wilderness.

When selecting your package you may want to select one that offers housing in various lodges located in the areas you are visiting. Some of the lodges offer many amenities found in cities. They may have several dining rooms to choose from and swimming pools which will appeal to any children in your group. Most include activities like day trips into the bush for wildlife viewing or overnight camping outings in nearby wilderness areas. Some lodges include these activities in the cost of your stay while others do not. Guests are advised that these additional costs can sometimes exceed the cost of their lodging.

Yet another means of experiencing this area is by traveling with a personal guide and staying in some of the many tent camps that are located throughout the country. The camps are reminiscent of safaris seen in old movies. There are rarely more than ten guest tents and meals are prepared many times over the open camp fire.

While camping out guests are guided, either on foot or in vehicles into the wilderness to view elephants, black rhinos, giraffes and other animals common to the area they are in. Some guests are lucky enough to spot lions or cheetahs but this is not common because they are very elusive.

Your trip to Namibia may turn out to be the first of many trips to this beautiful country. Most visitors feel that there is much more to see than can be seen in one ten day tour and hope to return in the future.
