Why SHTF Gear Is Absolutely Necessary

By Ruthie Livingston

When the shit really does hit the fan, you will know it. People who prepare for this eventuality say that this usually means a disaster such as a foreign invasion, a massive flood, power outage and, of course, zombies. Those people are called preppers and they have a lot of good ideas to consider. The first great idea is to plan for what you want to have as SHTF gear.

The first, rather obvious, thing you will need is a replacement for the home that you have had to leave. A suitable plan, before everything breaks down, will help you understand surviving in the wild. Preppers will often create a fortified compound out of the house they currently have so as to make it safe and secure as they go into the dangerous times.

The severity of something like this means you will not have the comfort of the home you have lived in and decorated just the way you wanted it. When you hear about bug out bags, you understand it is for living out of for about three days. The something that happens that sends you out of your house, this time, will take much longer to settle down.

The amount, type, size and configuration of your specific survival gear will depend, largely, on the number of people in your party. You do have to deal with a shelter and it should be on high ground. It will help immensely if it is secured against the weather and possible breaches.

You will need to become self sufficient. This means you may need the gear to keep yourself in electricity. This could mean a gas generator or, learn to do without electricity and get your heat from fireplace or pit. The Internet, during a wide spread disaster of the type being discussed, probably will not be there anyway. Part of the gear you need will be repair manuals for everything you have.

Public transportation probably is not available. True preppers have a large vehicle, already prepared and maintained so it will not break down easily. A repair manual, for the specific year, should be in the survival kit. Failing a motorized vehicle, because after a fairly short amount of time, there may not be gas, a large trailer or wagon, pulled by people or animals is the next best.

Security must not be left as an afterthought. Knives are appropriate and guns are often the first things preppers gather together. Ammunition should be stocked, now, before anything serious happens. Reloading gear is also something to think about. A pistol or rifle is absolutely no good for anything if there is no ammo.

The only reason you need this kind of gear is because this type of gear is the only thing that will see you through what is going to happen. The shtf stuff, and the ideas behind this gear, are what makes you able to endure and provide for your family when all else is falling apart. The absolute necessity of the right selection of materials is critical and planning this, before it becomes necessary, is more important.
