Experiencing Balloon Flights In Colorado

By Della Monroe

The activity of flying or cruising in a balloon is called ballooning. The three main things that make it more popular are the quietness of the flight, the beautiful view and the lack of feeling of movement. The latter can be attributed to the fact that the aircraft moves into the direction of the wind and the passenger can only feel movements when entering different currents. Balloon flights in Colorado are definitely a must try out activity for everyone.

A lot of people opt to purchase these flights from companies that already offer balloon rides because piloting requires the availability of equipment as well as licensing which is a lot of effort. These rides are mostly common in areas that receive tourists but are enjoyed in various parts across the world.

For those who are afraid of heights, they can enjoy watching them close up during balloon festivals and this can be a good idea of a family outing. These festivals also include other activities such as entertainment and amusement rides. These vessels can fly up to very high altitudes with the highest flight reaching 21,290 meters which is a world record.

The vessel has to have additional supply of oxygen for the people on board like all other unpressured aircrafts especially if it will reach and exceed a height of 3,180 meters. All launching activities usually take place during cool hours such as at dusk and at dawn. The reason for this being, the winds are lighter then which is good for the launching and flying as well.

Thermals are vertical air currents that result from the heating the ground which make the process of piloting difficult; they can be avoided by flying at the right time. In extreme cases these currents can affect the ability an aircraft to climb thus bringing about a forced landing. Before any flight begins, is the duty of a pilot to check the weather and identify the best take-off point.

The point of take-off should be free of any hindrances such as power lines, buildings and trees and should have enough space to lay out and inflate the envelope. The weather should also allow for good visibility and the winds slow to ensure smooth take-off. It should be situated in an area that will facilitate the wind to blow in the direction where it is expected to land.

The setup process begins with the vessel being unpacked from its bag and spread out fully on the ground then connecting the burner and basket to it. In order for it to assume its basic shape, a fan is used to blow in cold air which is then heated by the burner. One member of this crew should hold onto a rope that is connected to the apex to prevent it from launching unexpectedly and swaying.

The direction of these flights is mostly determined by the wind and the altitude can be manipulated by making changes to the temperature of the air inside the envelope. A number of balloonists prefer to be followed by a vehicle to the point of landing which will facilitate their return to the launching point. Communication between the two is mainly done through shouting and radio.
