San Jose Top Religious Sites to Visit

San Jose, CA was founded in Nov of 1777 as Pueblo de San Jose. The town was originally built as a farm to support the Spanish military, but later was the state capital when California became a state in 1850. It's a city rich with history and some of the loveliest landmarks are those with a spiritual nature. The majority of the churches in the area have a rich past, but 1 or 2 date back to California's start. When visiting, one should attempt to visit the spiritual landmarks in San Jose. Here listed are just a few of San Jose religious landmarks.

Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph

Just outside of the South Market lays the St. Joseph Cathedral, which is among the religious sites in San Jose, CA. This church was initially built in 1803; however it has been rebuilt many times. The 1st adobe structure was damaged by tremors; the second was spoiled by the 1868 Hayward earthquake. The third attempt was destroyed by a fire and the fourth was only a temporary building. Finally in 1884, the Cathedral was reconstructed and is still operational today. It's the oldest parish in San Jose. It is best renowned for its fantastic works of art.

San Jose Betsuin Buddhist Church

In the guts of San Jose, CA lays a beautiful Buddhist church. The San Jose Betsuin Buddhist Church is the Church of the Jodo Shinshu Nishi Hongwanji tradition and was set up in 1902. They host traditional Japanese festivals and serve Japanese cuisine. It's a San Jose spiritual landmark because of their festivals and continuing services.

Mission San Jose

The Mission San Jose was founded in June of 1797 and fully restored in 1985, making it one of the very oldest religious landmarks in San Jose. It is the location of the first Caesarian section birth, C-Section, in Alta California. Even though the church has been restored to be earthquake stable, many say it is an precise replica of the first mission. The mission was founded by Pa Fermin Francisco de Lasuen as a technique to teach the locals Christianity and the Spanish life.

Statue of Jesus Christ

In front of Cathedral of Belief in San Jose, lying in a beautiful bush is a statue of Jesus Christ with his hands outstretched. Under the statue is the quote "Come to me, all you who are tired and encumbered, and I will give you rest." The quote is from St Matthew 11:28 in the new testament of the Bible. This lovely statue is a great non secular site in San Jose to go visit because of the peace and tranquillity it brings.First Unitarian Church of San JoseWith only one hundred folk in attendance, Unitarian services started in San Jose in 1865. The 1st Unitarian Church of San Jose is an unprecedented building due to its help in the women's suffrage movement and helping victims of the Civil War. The church was really built in 1892, over 25 years after services initially began.
