Helpful Hints Regarding Mini Storage Units

By Joyce McIntosh

There's no denying that self-storage units come in handy for a variety of purposes. Sometimes you need a place to store a boat or a trailer or vehicle. Sometimes you need a place to put your things during a move or, if you are a student, you'll need storage during the summer when you head home for break. Storage units also a great place to store office files or perhaps extra furnishings or belongings that just don't fit in your home.

Most storage facilities offer a variety of different sized units to accommodate the differing needs of their clients. It is important that you calculate about how much space you need so that you don't end up paying for a bigger unit than you might actually utilize. If you are a college student who needs to pack up a dorm room, a 4'x8' unit or 6'x6' unit is probably a good size. This will fit bedding, clothes, books and other odds and ends, such as a dorm fridge or microwave.

Larger units, such as a 5'x10' size can be an excellent option if you need to store files or file cabinets or perhaps some extra office supplies. At around $40 per month, renting a storage unit is far cheaper than renting a larger office, so if you to make some space for new employees in your office or just feel crowded, it can be very cost effective to think about a mini storage unit.

For those who are moving and need to pack up and store the contents of a one-bedroom apartment or a studio-size apartment, you could opt for a 6'x12' unit, especially if you won't be storing several appliances. If you do need to store your washer, dryer and fridge, a large 10'x10' unit is a better idea. For apartments or homes that have three or four bedrooms, you probably should think about a large 10'x20' or 10'x24' unit. The latter of which is a great option if you are storing a tent trailer, boat or a vehicle.

There are several Bath mini storage facilities and East Lansing or West Lansing storage companies, so when shopping around, choose a company that takes security very seriously. The facility should be completely fenced and well lit. There should be security cameras on site in several areas, as well.

It is also handy to find a storage facility that allows patrons to access their units 24 hours a day. Choose a facility that does not require a security deposit and also offers renting by the month, rather than a long-term contract. Some facilities even have a weekly lease option which can be very cost effective if you just need the unit for a week or two, such as in between a move. Don't forget to inquire about discounts for students, senior citizens and active military personnel.
