Why It's Extremely Important Not To Rent A Car On St Thomas

By Mario Smith

As we've seen before transportation in St Thomas is a crucial subject to get the most out of your trip there in the island. You are now aware that traffic in St Thomas always flows from the lefthand side of the road and that side is also the side where the steering wheel is placed most of the time making the possibility of renting a car less convinent than others. There are still however many other ways to enjoy transportation on the island: through safari bus, public bus, renting motorcycles or bicycles or traveling through St Thomas taxi service. However, St. Thomas is not suitable for walking as a means of getting around and is for the most part not hitch-hiking friendly. Exploring the island does require motored transportation.

St Thomas taxis are amazing that they are at the same time convenient, confortable, good looking and cheap. Traveling with a local that can give you data at the same time about how to move around is a non-negligible bonus. Hence, St Thomas taxi service is much more convenient than the bus service and can lead you to places where both the bus and the boat in St Thomas can't.

More importantly, many of St Thomas taxis are huge, comfortable and can carry many people at the same time. They're a great way to move around the island. They'll stop at all the major tourist sites. "But beware: they aren't metered, so negotiate your fare before accepting the ride". Most pay somewhere between $7 and $15 per person for a roundtrip taxi to and from the hotels to top sites on St. Thomas; between $6 and $25 per person to get around St. John; and between $6 and $30 per person for a roundtrip taxi around much of St. Croix.

Between Public Transportation, Scooters, Motorcycles and Bicycle Country Buses travel between town and Red Hook every hour. They start running at 5.15am from town and end at 8.00pm from Red Hook. There are buses that travel past the airport toward Bordeaux. City buses travel between the Schneider Regional Medical Center bus stop to town starting at 6.15am until 8:00pm. The first bus from the Airport to town is at 6am and the last is 8:00pm. However the public bus system is not very reliable and is not recommended for tourist nor people on a limited time schedule. Scooters and Motorcycles are available for rent but will be quite expensive if you are traveling with 4+ people. More importantly scooters are not the SAFEST way to travel around St. Thomas. Finally, Bicycles are available for rent but clearly more for sport than transportation unless you are ready to sweat a lot.

"Many St Thomas taxis carry 8 to 12 passengers in vans and to get to specific locations such as the Airport. The charge for a taxi exclusively for yourself for a trip from the Airport to Red Hook is $90 for up to 4 passengers total, each additional passenger over 4 is $15. Each for exclusive transport within the Town limits is $55 for up to 4 passengers and $7.00 for each additional passenger."
