Experience The African Wilderness With A Tanzania Safari

By Jocelyn Davidson

Africa is a continent of extremes, with bustling cities on the one hand and untamed wilderness on the other. Any visit to this part of the world should include some time spent in nature to appreciate the wide open spaces. With a Tanzania safari, you not only get to experience the African landscape but if you time it right, you'll witness the vast herds of wildebeest on their famous annual migration.

Tanzania is a quite large republic in East Africa. It's largest neighbors are Mozambique, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya, which lie to the south, west and north respectively. Like most African countries, this one is steeped in history, as evidenced by places such as Zanzibar, an island just off the coast where you'll find centuries-old Arabic architectural treasures.

Some visitors come to the country to enjoy its beaches and world-class diving but for most, a true highlight is going on safari. You'll find packages designed with your specific interests in mind, whether these are hunting, photography or local culture. At the same time, you'll get to understand why Africa manages to find a permanent place in the hearts of all who visit her.

The Tanzanian people have realized that their wildlife is one of their greatest treasures and they've created a range of parks where the many different species are protected. Popular destinations with tourists include the area around Mount Kilimanjaro, the Ngorongoro Crater, the Olduvai Gorge and the Udzungwa Mountains. However, the Serengeti is the one everyone wants to experience, especially in January and February when the wildebeest migrate. Other animals that call the different parks their home include zebras, warthogs, giraffes, monkeys, elephants and predators such as lions, leopards and crocodiles. The many bird species add some extra color.

It's perfectly possible to rough it with a budget package. However, there's no reason why you can't enjoy the bush in style. Luxury lodges and tented camps make it possible to experience the outdoors in the ultimate comfort. You'll also enjoy mouthwatering meals cooked for you with the greatest care and you haven't really seen a sunset until you've seen one on the African plains while sipping on a cocktail. Most importantly, you'll be able to go on game drives with guides who know exactly where to look for those animals.

The best time to visit is during the dry season, which normally falls within the first few months of the year. Even though it is almost unbearably hot, the lack of rain means that animals tend to congregate near watering holes where they're easy to spot. The vegetation is less dense too, so it's more difficult for the wildlife to hide among the trees. Bear in mind that malaria is a risk, although this illness is more prevalent during the rainy season.

Because of its popularity as tourist destination, the Tanzanian infrastructure is well developed in those areas most frequented by visitors. There's a good network of domestic flights that will make getting to your lodge a breeze. Moreover, there are large international airports at Kilimanjaro and Dar es Salaam with direct connections to airports in the rest of Africa as well as in Europe and in Asia.

Probably the easiest way to visit is to book a safari package holiday. This will include transport and accommodation and tour operators can be found online or through a travel agency. However, it's essential to book far ahead in order to avoid disappointment, especially if you're planning on visiting during the dry season.
