Peru Tours Expose Tourists To An Enthralling World

By Kurt Lavecchia

Peru tours will take the tourist away from the well-beaten tracks of Europe and introduce one to the ancient world of Peru. This South American country provides an introduction to two decidedly intriguing empires in history. The remnants of the glorious Inca Empire and the impact of the Spanish Empire on the country provide unique insights into the world history. At the same time, its geography offers adventure tourism to excite even the most jaded of tourists.

Adventure awaits on each leg of a Peruvian tour as visitors are introduced to Amerindian and Spanish traditions and cultures, as well as a host of more minor, but equally fascinating cultures. This geographically enormous country stretches far down the Western coast, offering excellent surfing in the sea and rafting down the rivers, mountaineering and mountain biking or simply hiking in the vast Andes. However, it is for the ancient cities and ruins that most travel to Peru.

The vast majority of tourists look forward to at least a glimpse of the Inca remains. For many, it is the highlight of their visit. Tours usually begin in lesser known the Sacred Valley where Llamas and the delightful Alpacas are bred. The long Machu Picchu trail through the valleys and mountains seems to add to a mysterious aura in the place in which a highly civilized nation lived in deep isolation from the world.

Machu Picchu has been retained in good original condition because it was not found by the Spanish invaders who despoiled so much of South America. The site was discovered a century ago by an American historian and since has become a Mecca for tourists. Preserving the site is important and most outlying buildings have been reconstructed according to original designs to allow tourists to immerse themselves in the world of the Incas.

The trail leads one through valleys and up steep slopes to Machu Picchu where the Inca Emperor lived half a millennium ago. The magnificent architect found at this site became an inspiration for Art Deco in the early twentieth century. The nearby city of Cuzco is a World Heritage site offering ancient ruins, history, culture and even a lively nightlife.

For those with limited interest in archeology, modern day Peru offers much to capture the attention of visitors. The country is awash with festivals. Approximately three thousand festivals are held each year. Magnificent and usually highly colored art is available in most cities and towns and the magnificent churches are an art form in themselves.

The tourist should not miss the opportunity to go canopy climbing in the Amazon jungle or kayak down the Amazon River. Explore the rain forest and be transported into an ancient world of tall trees and thick undergrowth. Take a trip to the Nazca Desert and view the arid land on which the mysterious Nazca lines are drawn.

Peru Tours can focus on one or more than one aspect of the country. Other tours are eclectic and take in a host of local sights and experiences. Choosing a tour depends entirely on the interests of tourists and the amount of time available for there is much to be seen in this exciting corner of South America.
