Exercising By Taking Wisconsin Bike Rides

By Freida McCall

Wisconsin bike rides are a great experience for nearly any age. Not only do they help improve your fitness level but they are also good for the environment. While many riders are professionals, most people just enjoy touring the scenery and Wisconsin has some of the best scenery around.

Bicycles were invented some time in the 19th Century but ridership has bloomed since then. Reports indicate that over a billion people are riding bicycles throughout the world. Some places this is the primary mode of transportation. Society benefits as much as people do from cycling by the reduction in fuel consumption and decrease in air pollution.

There also are many benefits for the rider; including the well known health advantages associated with regular exercise. Also, parking is easier, it is easier to maneuver through traffic, and access to roads is much easier. There are also reduced financial costs, especially as the cost of gasoline continues to rise.

Some professional bicycle riders make a living by entering races. These include both high performance racers and mountain biker racers who compete for large prizes. In fact, this has become so lucrative that biking organizations have restrictions placed on riders as well as on the cycles. In some countries bicycles are reinforced to be used as utility bikes and to carry heavy loads.

The geology in Wisconsin is varied and includes highlands and lowlands. 46 percent of the state is forested and this keeps some areas cooler. It is hot in the summertime and very humid. However, it usually stays below 85 degrees F even in the high season. The winters can be extremely cold though, and the typical annual snow fall is more than 40 inches.

The Great River Road Bikeway offers one of the best biking experiences in the state; it stretches 250 miles and cyclists can ride the entire segment or choose a smaller portion that meets their level of experience. Parts of it are located on the Great River State Trail, but on others cyclists ride on highways that may have light or heavy traffic. Small villages also lie along the route so riders can get food, water, or even a hotel for the night.

There are risks associated with riding bicycles. One of these involves the risk associated with vehicle drivers on the same roads. Some places have clearly marked bicycle lanes but in many rural areas these do not exist. Other risks include those from poorly fitted seats, overuse by the rider when they are first learning, poor preparation, and choosing a gear that is too high for the hill. These can cause nerve damage or knee injuries. It is important to make sure that you have the correct equipment; such as helmets, shoes with a good grip, and proper lighting.

There are many exciting opportunities for Wisconsin bike rides. Wisconsin Department of Transportation offers a biking guide that can help you locate touring trails, mountain bike locations, and other road routes. Always make sure you have the proper equipment and that the trail you have chosen is appropriate considering your fitness level and experience.
