There are various features that may differentiate the requirements of marking in different places such as proximity to airports and the weather among others. The following are basically some guidelines that should be followed for obstruction lighting for different structures.

There are a lot of guidelines that have been provided by the FAA based on the height that a structure in a particular location can reach and the marking requirements. For instance, when a red lighting system is used, the painting of the building should be done in alternating colors of orange and white so that the building is visible even during the day. The red light should be used to enhance visibility at night. The painting requirement can be omitted if the white or dual marking system is used.

The height of the structure is not the only thing that is usually considered when marking a particular structure. Other factors that the FAA looks at include, in industrial structures, the place should be checked out by a professional so that the best marking system is selected. This is because it does not need frequent maintenance which helps to save a lot of funds.

This type of lighting has also some additional benefits especially to the environment. Unlike other forms of illumination, it does not use mercury therefore there is no emission of harmful substances to the environment. They also use less energy and therefore limit the impacts of fossil fuels on the environment.

These lights are also better because they are easy to program. There exist various features that can be added so that the system is easy to control like turning on and off and dimming of the light when the temperature needs to be regulated. They are also never affected easily by changes in climatic conditions hence they can be put on structures in any location.
