Traveling New Zealand In A Campervan

By Adam Finan

Why Campervan In New Zealand?

There are a variety of reasons to rent/buy a campervan in New Zealand and the epic scenery and stunning beauty of this country should be just one reason. You can relax under starry skies and park by a lake while you watch the sun set behind the mountains.

Driving around in a campervan means you can visit anywhere you want and are not limited by time or bus schedules. New Zealand offers two islands filled with unique activities and stunning landscape for you to check out. There are plenty of hidden gems tucked away in the valleys and hiding behind the mountains of New Zealand. The more remote the location, the more rewarding the experience. Guided tours and coach trips often drive right past the best spots as they cannot get access. In your own campervan you can chill and enjoy the scenery until you actually want to leave.

Will It Be Expensive?

A hard question to answer.. Well it depends on a number of factors like how many people are splitting the costs? Are you looking for a cheap camper or a fancy one with all of the trimmings? Is your plan to stay at DOC sites or park up in the middle of nowhere? When you share costs and weigh up the costs of accommodation and eating out, you have a reasonable price. An 8 bed dorm room in New Zealand's south island goes for $27 upwards all year round.

Relaxing

It is hard to explain to those who have not been to New Zealand the true magnitude of the beauty. Around every corner another spectacular site and across each ridge is another epic mountain pass. Images of campervans parked up by the lake with kayaks paddling in the distance has been a dream of mine for years. Even the driving is fun as the roads wind and turn through forests and across mountains.

Travel With Friends

When you and a friend chose to travel together in a campervan, you will have the best time of your lives (well, most of the time!). There wil be no more missed sunsets along the West Coast of New Zealand, and plenty of nights cuddled up under the stars in your cosy camper. There is something very intimate about living in your camper for a few weeks while traveling around.

To Rent or Buy A Campervan?

This depends on the length of your stay in New Zealand. If you come on a working holiday, then I recommend having a look at buying a campervan as you will have one year to use it. If you rent your campervan, it is pretty expensive for most unless you are sharing the costs between friends. Good news is that campervans in New Zealand will hold their value and you should be able to sell it for as much as you bought it for after a few months of travel.
