By Michelle Colana

Grilling a gourmet meal while camping can be a lot of fun, not to mention delicious. Nevertheless, in some cases we are limited by time, cash or cargo area. That is where inexpensive and easy camp meals are handy.

You don't always have to forgo a warm, prepared meal to low-cost food that is easy to prepare. With a portable gas burner, you can still have your hot cup of java in the morning, cook warm morning meals, make hearty stews and plenty more.

A portable gas burner costs less than $20 plus a mini propane tank will cost a few dollars. Besides being more affordable than a barbecue, camping stove or portable grill - this cooking set up uses up virtual no cargo area in your vehicle. They are even perfect for backpacking trips.

Assuming that you don't want to bring food that you need to refrigerate, below are some ideas for camping meals that are simple, inexpensive and healthy.

Pasta

Get yourself a large stew pot, and you can boil water for all types of noodles. Pasta is cheap, uses up basically no cargo area and does not have to be refrigerated. Add a jar of pasta sauce, and you have a warm, substantial meal. Leftovers also make a fantastic, easy lunch.

Chili Beans

Get a few cans of chili and warm them up in your pot. Numerous products already have seasonings included, so this means less work on your part without having to give up taste. Once again, no refrigeration needed, and of course canned food keeps for a long time. You might even include your chili to your pasta meal above.

Hot Cereal

There is nothing like a warm meal when you wake up when you are camping, and oatmeal costs virtually nothing and takes up really little space. You can use the same pot you utilized for the pasta and the chili and toss in some oats for a few minutes with some cinnamon or brown sugar. For a more substantial meal, you can even add some trail mix or dried fruit, which are fantastic treats to pack for a camping journey anyway.

Rice

Although it takes longer to cook than pasta, rice is a nice option, because it is compact, affordable and it doesn't have to be refrigerated in its dry state. Rice complements any sort of meat, fish or veggie, however, I even love it plain with some soy sauce.

Canned Tuna

Canned tuna is a cheap, easy and a quick source of healthy protein. Add it to rice, sandwiches, tortilla chips or eat it by itself from the can. Small serving containers are also a convenient perk.

Potatoes

This vegetable may use up more area, but it is easy to carry, doesn't require refrigeration and is a cheap healthy carb. You might choose baked potatoes or those cooked in a frying pan vs boiled potatoes, but no matter what type of food preparation devices you have, understand that you have meal options.

Peanut Butter

Don't forget peanut butter. It is quick and simple and a great source of protein as well. If you are trying to find an option to sandwich bread, why not get crackers or rice cakes?

There are plenty more food options to create easy camping meals, however, these staples are really flexible and help you produce lots of different dishes simply by changing your flavorings or sauce.
