The Spirital Side of New Orleans

By Herald Moores

There are many religious sites in New Orleans. This city has some extremely strange religious landmarks too. Taking a brief look at these different places will hopefully inspire you to make a journey to this unbelievable town.

St. Louis Cathedral

This is the oldest cathedral in the US that is still active. It is found in the back of the important Jackson Square. The current cathedral is essentially the third building to stand in this actual spot. It dates all of the way back to 1794. This cathedral is very dramatic looking. Among New Orleans religious landmarks, this is a must see.

Voodoo Spiritual Temple

This is one of the more weird religious sites in New Orleans. It was founded in 1990, and is hip with the holiday makers. It is founded on West African Spiritual practices. The key room in the church contains alters with numerous offerings on them. The temple makes an attempt to prove misguidance about Voodoo wrong. They offer many various things for visitors. These are weddings, blessings, bone readings, and even special rituals. It's managed by the Priestess Miriam who also cells CDs of her different chants.

Saint Ann Shrine

This shrine started as an official activity for the Saint Ann Parish. It started in 1902. From the very beginning, it's a place for official parties, like marriage. This New Orleans spiritual landmark was made as a copy of the cave at Lourdes. On the right outside wall is a small statue of the Perfect Conception. Underneath that's holy water, which visitors collect in bottles. On the left of the cave is a small gift shop. The head of the cave is completely open to see the sky. This is a beautiful shrine with a large amount of attention to detail.

Saint Joseph Catholic Church

This church was dedicated in 1892. This non secular landmark has the longest aisle of any church in New Orleans. It is a really ornate and beautiful church. The church is still extremely active in New Orleans. It's a big church, as it can seat up to 2000 people. The first church that was built wasn't virtually the size it is today.

Saint Roch and the Campo Santo

This New Orleans non secular landmark has an especially interesting history. In 1867, there had been a pandemic and a local clergyman claimed a prayer to Saint Roch. St. Roch is the patron saint of plaque victims. When everybody survived, a chapel was built to laud it. Visitors can leave presents in a small room off of the alter. These gifts should be gifts of healing, like medical supplies. The collection of gifts that has been left in the little room has been said to be very strange, and often even creepy.
